How to lay a gravel driveway
Laying a gravel driveway is straightforward when you follow the right steps:
Choose the gravel type
Start by deciding the type of gravel you want for the finished surface.
Measure the driveway
Measure the length and width of your driveway and calculate the square meterage. This will help you know how much gravel to order. As a general rule of thumb, one bag of gravel usually covers 5m2 at a depth of 50mm.
Decide on edging
Edging keeps the gravel contained and gives your driveway a neat, professional appearance. There are a few different options to consider:
- Bricks or pavers
- Natural stone
- Timber sleepers
Installing edging before the final gravel layer can help hold some of the materials in place.
Dig the area
Remove all vegetation and topsoil in the area and start digging. For a typical domestic driveway, you should dig to a depth of between 50mm and 200mm.
Lay the sub-base
Spread the sub-base in layers. We’d recommend using MOT Type 1 for this, making sure to compact each layer as you go using a vibrating plater compactor. Make sure to leave at least 50mm between the sub-base and the surface. A sub-base is important because this is what will carry the core weight of any vehicles on the driveway.
Add a weed prevention membrane
Next, you should lay a permeable weed membrane over the compacted sub-base. Overlap joints by at least 150mm and avoid using a non-permeable plastic sheet, which can trap water. The membrane is important as it will prevent weeds from growing through the gravel while still allowing water to drain through the driveway.
Add the gravel
Now it’s time to spread your chosen gravel. Do this evenly and to a depth of about 50mm. Rake the gravel so it is level and check that the edging remains visible.
Compact and finish
Finally, lightly compact the surface to help the stones settle. Check for any low spots and top up where necessary.
How to maintain a gravel driveway
Gravel driveways are relatively low maintenance, but a little regular attention can go a long way when it comes to keeping them looking their best.
- Rake the surface: Doing this occasionally can redistribute gravel and remove tyre tracks.
- Top up gravel when needed: You may need to top up high-traffic areas now and again.
- Remove weeds: Your weed membrane should stop weeds from growing in the gravel, but if you notice any around the edges, pull them out before they become established.
- Keep edges tidy: Sweep or rake gravel back into place.
- Avoid heavy turns: Harsh turning in your car on the gravel can displace it.
